Millhouse on the Bridge, on the east bank of the Coal River, overlooks the historic six-arch Richmond Bridge.
Millhouse on the Bridge, with its massive rough-hewn eucalypt beams and convict-made bricks, was originally a steam flour mill - one of four mills in Richmond, which last century was the granary for Australias first two colonies: Van Diemens Land (later to become Tasmania) and New South Wales.
The property is classified by both the National Trust and the National Estate.
It is the only mill still standing in Richmond and its position adjacent to Australias oldest bridge gives it unique appeal.
This appeal resulted in the Australian landscape painter John Eldershaw converting the mill into his own private residence and studio in the 1920s.

Richmond, in southern Tasmania, is renowned as the best-preserved Georgian village in Australia. The idyllic Coal River meanders alongside the village and underneath Richmond Bridge.
The bridge, the oldest in Australia, was built by convicts out of locally-quarried sandstone in 1823.

Over the road from Millhouse is St Johns, the oldest Catholic church in Australia. And just a short stroll across the famous bridge, and around a bend, is Richmond, the prettiest historic village in Australia.
As well as the bridge, Richmond Gaol is a must see. It is the oldest penal settlement standing in Australia, older even than the Port Arthur penal settlement.
In the Coal Valley, on both sides of Richmond, are some of the finest boutique wineries in Australia, specialising in cool climate varieties such as pinot noir and chardonnay.
Richmond is the perfect base for the discerning visitor to Tasmania. Hobart is just 20 minutes away and Hobart Airport is even closer. Historic Port Arthur is just one hours drive. Richmond is also an ideal point of departure for the East Coast, the Derwent Valley and the historic towns of Oatlands and Ross in Tasmanias Midlands.
